I’ve started this site to keep a record of what it is like to be a cyclist in this city, this city being London, UK. I first got on my bike (as an adult) 15 years ago, and things are very different now from then: more people, more cyclists, more traffic.
My primary agenda is to create a space to report reckless driving. I have had some brushes with danger over the last year or so; some of it has been my fault, but much of it has been the fault of angry and annoyed motorists. I want to record those moments of sheer recklessness on the part of motorists so that it’s not just the deaths of cyclists which are reported. If we counter the recklessness, maybe we can slow down and/or stop the deaths. Also, as much as I have the current misfortune to live in London, I will accept submissions from anywhere in the world.
I had the idea for this site through the anger generated by the fact that the two letters I had written to HGV operators, about incidents which I felt endangered my life, were never responded to. Not even a generic courtesy letter. Nothing. I decided then, that since these companies have no interest in responding to complaints or engaging with cyclists in order to help to facilitate greater levels of safety, that I would instead publicly report their actions. I hope then, that this site might one day get their attention and force them to do something, acknowledge my points. Of course, the more people that report their experiences, the more chance we have of getting those operators to listen.
Essentially then, this space is to be a repository of information about incidents with HGVs and other motorised road users as reported by cyclists. I want to report the instances whereby you (and I!) have a near miss or a close shave; where you are shaken, scared, terrified, angry and indignant because some driver of some large (or small) vehicle has just wantonly endangered your life. I want you to give me the details of the experience and I will post it here. Essentially I am naming and shaming in the hope that, eventually, HGV operators (and others) will care enough to respond to my/our letters and give their drivers the awareness training that many so desperately need.
Please go to the Submit section for more information if you wish to participate and report your experience.
